I have used a password protected area on my site for years, you can set it up by using HTML Password Lock Software. It allows entry by a password that you email to the subscriber. It even has a LOST PASSWORD SYSTEM that if setup correctly emails the user automatically....

you will need an SSL certificate - otherwise, nobody will trust your trust... I sure as hell wouldnt
